Hurricanes have a penchant for wreaking havoc at a minimum, utter devastation at their worst. The past couple of weeks have proven that! During New Jersey’s peak hurricane season, we often see storms that result in power outages. For homeowners who use their garage door as their main entry point to their home, it can be scary to find themselves locked out because their garage doors have been disabled due to the power going out. As a premier garage door company serving New Jersey homeowners, we believe it is our responsibility to help keep you and your family safe in this event. Here are a few things you need to know if you find yourself in this predicament.
The Power Went Out, I Can’t Open My Garage. Now What?
How Do I Open a Garage Door When the Power Fails?
Many times, homeowners can manually open their door. Depending on your garage door opener, it may have a quick-release mechanism, which would allow you to manually control the garage door. If this is the case, you would find an emergency-release rope which, once pulled in the direction of the garage door opener’s motor, stops the carriage from connecting back to the rail trolley of the garage door opener. Upon this, you should be able to raise your garage door, as well as close it.
Resetting the Garage Door After a Power Outage
Though you may be able to manually get inside for the time being, your garage door likely needs to be reset. To do this, it needs to be open for the carriage and trolley to reconnect. Pull straight down on the emergency-release rope to reconnect them and try to open the garage door via the remote or wall control. If the garage door still doesn’t work, the malfunction may not be the result of the power outage.
Try replacing the battery and check to make sure the garage door is connected to the power outlet. If you’ve done these things, and your garage door won’t open, or the garage door is stuck, you may need to call a professional garage door repair company to take a look. Undertaking your own garage repairs can be dangerous – even deadly, especially if you’re dealing with garage door spring repair.
